How I Got Here: Wahid Aziz, CEO of Tasjeel.ae

Wahid explains how he and his business partner, who have always been passionate about tech and business, decided to buy Tasjeel.ae -- now the fastest growing UAE-focused domain registrar and website hosting provider.

Wahid has been one of those lucky people who always had a clear sense of direction in life. Tech and business have been his joint passions ever since his teens. Technology was his core focus throughout his time at school and university. On graduating, he immediately set out to build a career in the sector."

After a brief spell with UK mobile network '3', he stepped into a series of product management roles, climbing the ladder with some of the world's biggest web hosting providers -- 123reg, Host Europe Group (HEG) and GoDaddy among them.

"My future business partner, Dom Taylor, took the classic entrepreneurial route, founding a start-up, Vidahost, as a teenager fresh out of school. Vidahost merged with tsoHost, and Dom became a Director in the resulting Paragon Internet Group. Later, Paragon was bought by HEG (who I worked with). Ultimately, HEG would be bought by GoDaddy for $1.6 billion USD.

As a country, the UAE had always interested me. It's become such a powerful hub for entrepreneurism in the Middle East, and I wanted to contribute to that movement. We came together to acquire Tasjeel.ae in May 2018; I became CEO, and Dom CTO."

Buying Tasjeel.ae gave them a foothold in the market, but it also presented some challenges.

"Purchasing a business as a going concern is very different to launching a start-up. The positives -- like having a ready-made customer base and cash-flow -- are balanced by the baggage that comes with it."

"We've always been open about the fact that Tasjeel.ae had a mixed reputation when we bought it. Right from the start, our mission was to reinvent the company. We covered all the basics -- like a new logo -- but we wanted to shift the whole ethos of the brand."

"Our vision was a new kind of domain registrar and web host that was obsessively centred around the needs of our customers. With the UAE having such a thriving start-up scene, focusing on SMBs made perfect sense."

Since acquiring Tasjeel.ae
In the space of just two years, Tasjeel.ae has transitioned from selling .ae/.emarat domains, with a single web hosting package, to providing 100+ domain extensions. The company's suite of easy-to-use solutions now includes a WYSIWYG Website Builder, cloud hosting, WordPress hosting, Dubai web servers, premium domain names and more.

"For so long, the whole sector was dominated by telcos and international domain providers, but we're really climbing out of their shadow now. We've built Tasjeel.ae into one of the biggest 'challenger' companies, and we see plenty of scope for further growth as the market matures."
